Is the Bail System Broken? Find Out Dec. 1st
After the death of Freddie Gray and the aftermath of the Baltimore uprising, there’s been increased inquiry into whether equal justice is being served in our city. On December 1st, we will be hosting a talk on the Baltimore bail system by public defender Todd H. Oppenheim.
As City Paper noted in May 2015, after the Baltimore uprising: “Bail in Baltimore is a weird thing — and complicated, but it’s worth understanding because it matters.”
Oppenheim is a felony trial attorney in the Office of the Public Defender, with 10 years of experience representing indigent clients before the District Court and Circuit Court in Baltimore City. He has also contributed op-eds about local criminal justice issues to the Baltimore Sun and Baltimore Brew.
Oppenheim will speak about the issues with the current bail system and how it affects opportunities for equal justice in Baltimore. The talk will be followed by a Q & A session, so come prepared with questions!
We’re proud to host a discussion about this important topic, so the shop will remain open until 7:30 for this special event. Admission is free, and the kitchen will be open for food and beverages. Download the event flyer for more details.
